Swing dancing joins WaterFire on Saturday night
06/26/2003
Get your dancin' shoes out -- there'll be swing dancing at the outdoor Sovereign Plaza ballroom for Saturday night's WaterFire.
Music will be provided by John Worsley and Porky Cohen at the ballroom, which is where Weybosset and Westminster Streets meet downtown. Dance teacher Randy Deats will teach a class in swing from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., followed by public dancing till midnight. Guest dancers for the evening are The Dancin' Feelin'.
A special addition to this WaterFire is a pair of free concerts at the RISD Auditorium in Market Square, North Main and College Streets. At 8 p.m., the 50-member American Mandolin and Guitar Orchestra will perform. At 9:30 p.m., mandolin musician Marilynn Mair, a professor of music at Roger Williams University in Bristol, will perform a concert of Mandolin Tango with three visiting guitarists.
Saturday's is a full WaterFire, meaning that all 100 braziers along the rivers will be lit from sunset (8:24 p.m.) to 1 a.m. (The next scheduled WaterFire is July 12.)
As always, WaterFire is weather dependent, meaning that steady, sustained rain will result in cancellation. For updated information, call 272-3111 or visit www.waterfire.org.
