Tally of a Tragedy

12.03.2007

The Providence Journal has identified 462 people who, according to legal documents, police witness statements, survivors and others, were in The Station nightclub when it caught fire in 2003, ultimately killing 100 people and injuring more than 200 others.

The aftermath: Evidence releases

On Nov. 29, 2006, Attorney General Patrick C. Lynch released more than 3,000 pages of documents, evidence collected as part of the investigation into the Station nightclub fire.
On Feb. 1, 2007, Lynch's office released thousands of pages of previously secret grand jury testimony, witness statements and videos associated with criminal investigation into the fire.

These releases are in response to a public records' request by The Providence Journal, The Associated Press and the Boston Globe, as noted by the attorney general. The evidence was edited for privacy and sensitivity by Lynch's office and reviewed by The Journal.

The following are selections from the release.

Andrea Silva was one of the 50 family members who addressed the court before the sentencing of former Great White band manager, Daniel Biechele, who plead guilty to manslaughter charges for his role in igniting the pyrotechnics that touched off the blaze. Silva lost her uncle, Tom Medeiros, in the fire.
