Columnists on columnists
In New England this summer columnists struggled to understand the transgressions of Boston Globe columnists Patricia Smith and Mike Barnicle. Smith agreed to resign after she fabricated characters in her columns. Barnicle was first disciplined for using jokes in his column that had been published in a George Carlin book. Later he agreed to resign after he was accused of fabricating characters from a previous column. The first three columns were published prior to Barnicle's resignation.
