The sinking sun cast a golden glow upon the 300 guests who had gathered
on the lawn of Pelican Ledge, the oceanfront home of former Senator
Claiborne and Nuala Pell. They were there to celebrate the marriage of
the Pells' granddaughter, Tripler Pell, a third-year medical student at
Brown, and Tawfik Hammoud, a Moroccan entrepreneur.
The couple's shih tzu, Louie, joined the guests, donning top hat and
tails for the occasion. He posed for a quick portrait with Tripler while
the Hammoud family looked on.
Midway through the cocktail hour -- featuring champagne, strawberries
and shrimp cascading down a tower of ice -- Pell changed from her Vera
Wang gown to a caftan, handmade for her in Morocco. "The wedding has
grown into a balance of both of our backgrounds," said Tripler.
