Worried the gown won’t fit? Enroll in Bridal Boot Camp

They might be grunting, red-faced and sweaty now, but these women will look beautiful in their wedding gowns.

Bridal Boot Camp, a six-week program at the Best Fitness gym in Schenectady, N.Y., helps brides get in shape for their weddings. Every year, Karli Goering, head personal trainer at the gym, like many trainers across the country, says she is besieged by requests from brides-to-be (and often their bridesmaids) who want help getting fit in time for the big day. This year, she started a class that focuses exclusively on working out for the wedding day.

Goering teaches the class twice a week, and concentrates on toning the upper body, including the upper back, shoulders, arms and waist, “what they need to get into a dress,” she said.

Class members also have to commit to working out at home, and keeping their diets in check. Students in a recent class worked with steps, dumbbells, resistance bands, Bosu balls and their own weight, as they squatted and lunged across the classroom floor.

Goering is no drill sergeant, but she keeps the troops motivated, praising the women’s hard work and allowing frequent breaks.

Bride-to-be Amy Juliano, 22, and her mother, Lori Juliano, 49, go to the class together and both say it’s a great workout. Amy’s wedding isn’t until May 2009, but she already has the dress picked out: a simple halter neck, flowing chiffon.

Whether you’re in the audience or walking down the aisle, here are some exercises that will help you get ready for upcoming wedding season:

•Toss the bouquet: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, and hold a 5-pound dumbbell with both hands on the left side of your body. Now squat, and as you do, lift the dumbbell with both arms into the air above your right shoulder. After the left side, do the right. Three sets of 10 reps.

•The photographer’s turn: Hold a 5-pound dumbbell in front of you with both hands at shoulder height, and rotate your upper body to the left. As you rotate, lift your right heel from the ground to allow the full pivot. Return to start position, and do the same on the other side. Three sets of 10 reps.

•Walking down the aisle: Stand and take a large step sideways with your left foot. Now, squat down as far as you can. Keep your back straight, and lower yourself as though you were sitting on a chair, then stand up. Slide your right foot to meet your left foot, and then slide your left foot out again. Make your way across the room in this fashion, and then work your way back. Do 50 reps in a set (25 across the room, 25 back) for three sets, for a total of 150 squats.

•The groom’s proposal: Stand, left foot slightly behind your right foot. Hold one end of a resistance band in your right hand, and put the other end under your right foot. Lower yourself onto your left knee, and, as you do, raise your right hand shoulder-height in front of you. After you have “offered the ring,” return to starting position. Repeat on the other side. Three sets of 10 reps.
