SOUTH KINGSTOWN — URI basketball fans are about to be given an unprecedented inside look at how their team goes about its work during the season.
Cox Sports Television, which airs Rhody basketball, has put together a six-part documentary that follows the Rams both on and off the court. The first episode of the series, entitled “Somehow, Someway: A season with the URI Rams,” will premiere Sunday at 9 p.m. on Cox Sports Channel 3.
Episodes will air each night thereafter at 9 p.m. through Dec. 4, leading up to URI’s game against Providence College Dec. 5 at the Ryan Center.
“’Somehow, Someway’ provides a one-of-a-kind look at URI basketball, and fans will be treated to a glimpse into the inner workings of head coach Jim Baron’s program,” said Thorr Bjorn, URI’s director of athletics. “URI is happy to have been a part of this unique opportunity to showcase the lives of our coaches and student-athletes.”
The series tells the story of last season’s 23-11 squad both on and off the court, starting with Baron’s story of how basketball helped him out of the Brooklyn’s projects and following the team all the way through last May’s graduation ceremony. Cox Sports was given exclusive, behind-the-scenes access to the coaches and players on campus, on the bus, and in the locker room. The documentary includes the buzzer-beater against Dayton, the tight game against Providence at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center, and the road trip to Cameron Indoor Stadium to play Duke. The series culminates with graduation, celebrating the college careers of URI’s three seniors — Jimmy Baron, Kahiem Seawright and Jason Francis.
Cox will televise 15 URI men’s basketball games this season, beginning with the PC contest.
