URI Rams
College basketball: URI 93, Concordia 54

SOUTH KINGSTOWN — Akeem Richmond does not fit the profile of a bigtime shooting guard, which is one reason it took him so long to make a decision on a college.
He is small for an off-guard, at 6-foot-1. He looks like a point guard, but plays like a shooter. When he does shoot, his form is not classic. Both elbows are bent wide when he goes up.
But as he showed Friday night, the freshman sure knows how to put the ball in the basket. Richmond scored a team-high 19 points, including 5-for-8 on 3-pointers, as he led the University of Rhode Island to a 93-54 exhibition victory over Concordia University of Montreal at the Ryan Center.
Richmond’s performance was easily the highlight for the Rams. Finding outside shooting is a priority for this season with Jimmy Baron now playing professionally in Turkey. Rhody coach Jim Baron has his team running and gunning once again. He gives anyone who is open the green light to fire it up.
“We want to attack the basket more and use our athleticism,” Baron said.
But if the outside shot is there, the Rams are allowed to fire it up. They took 26 treys against Concordia and made 10. Subtracting Richmond’s 5-for-8, the rest of the team was 5-for-18, which makes Richmond’s presence all the more welcome.
“We want him to score the ball. That’s what he can do,” Baron said.
“From the time he first got here this summer and we saw how he can shoot, we told him to take it when he has it,” said forward Delroy James, another of the five Rams in double figures with 12 points.
Richmond poured in 2,846 points in high school in Sanford, N.C., the second-highest total in that state’s history. He was recruited by fellow A-10 member Charlotte, among other schools, before deciding late on URI.
“I wanted to find a place where I fit in, and I fit in here,” Richmond said. “They want me to shoot.”
Richmond’s father Eric made the trip from North Carolina to see his son’s first college game and cheered him on from his seat behind URI’s bench.
In addition to Richmond’s 19 points and James’ 12, Will Martell had 15 (6-for-7 from the field), Keith Cothran 13 and Lamonte Ulmer 11 points and 10 rebounds.
As they plan to do all season, the Rams pressed throughout, and the pressure was both good and bad. URI forced 23 turnovers (12 steals), which led to a whopping 37 points. But when Concordia beat the pressure, it scored a number of easy baskets, which could hurt URI against tougher competition.
“We speeded up the game. That’s what we want to do,” Baron said of the press. “You can’t give up too many easy ones.”
RAM NOTES: Forward Ben Eaves did not dress. He injured his right wrist at practice. He likely would have played if it had been a regular-season game . . . Freshman point guard Lisandro Ruiz Moreno did not play because he has yet to be cleared by the NCAA. Ruiz Moreno, who is from Argentina, has been practicing with the Rams. He is expected to be cleared to play, but the NCAA has not yet given its approval . . . Freshman wing Nikola Malesevic dressed but did not play because of a sprained ankle . . . One of the top juniors in the country, Tyler Olander, sat in the first row behind the URI bench. He sat with his roommate at Worcester Academy, Billy Baron, who has committed to URI next year.
