BOSTON -- The Rams had plenty of stars in the 85-72 victory over Northeastern last night, most notably Kahiem Seawright (19 points, 7 boards, 3 assists, 3 blocks and 1 steal) and Keith Cothran (17 points, 6 steals, 4 rebounds).

Still, the guy who had the most spectacular stretch of the night was Lamonte Ulmer. The junior forward scored three times at the rim in a 3:30 period of the second half to help make sure Northeastern did not rally.

URI had taken the lead with 16 straight points early in the second half and was on top 58-48 when Seawright dropped a pretty bounce pass to Ulmer cutting to the hoop. He dunked it home.

A short time later, Ulmer came flying in from the weak side after a missed shot, cupped the ball and dunked it home again. On URI’s next trip downcourt, Jimmy Baron saw Ulmer cutting in from the left again. He lofted an alley-oop pass to the 6-foot-7 Ulmer. The timing was a bit off. But Ulmer caught the ball and banked it home for another gorgeous hoop.

That made it 69-52. Northeastern coach Bill Coen called a timeout but Ulmer had done his damage.

“It gets the whole team riled up,” Ulmer said of his dunks. “It’s fun.”

Free throws

Northeastern’s Coen was called for a technical foul 1:46 into the game, protesting an offensive foul call on Matt Janning, his team’s star. … URI went with some changes on defense, moves that worked out well. Baron is Rhody’s off guard and Janning, who had 34 points against the Rams last season, plays the same spot. URI played Cothran on Janning and Cothran did an outstanding job holding Janning to eight points. Rhode Island got in trouble with 12 first-half turnovers, three of which were on offensive fouls. The Rams finished with 21 to 10 for the Huskies. URI won the rebound battle easily, 39-23.
