Helen Glover: Hatch-Hawk incident is still smoldering; Donaldson gains power

01:00 AM EST on Thursday, March 4, 2004

Helen Glover, of Portsmouth, a contestant in Survivor: Thailand in the 2002 season, is now a freelance Survivor commentator. Here is her report on tonight's episode of Survivor: All-Stars (airing at 8 on Channels 12 and 4) in which two tribes of contestants are vying for a million-dollar prize off the Pacific coast of Panama.

Tonight's Tension

Talk about tension! Sue Hawk is livid over Richard Hatch's naked "advances" towards her on last week's balance beam challenge, and demands satisfaction from host Jeff Probst. Apparently, Hatch rubbed up against her, , made suggestive remarks, and otherwise humiliated her, and she wants revenge, or at least an apology. The heat is on over at Mogo Mogo. Now that Hatch is gone, Colby Donaldson is calling the shots and puts Shii Ann Huang on notice: her slip-under-the-radar strategy won't cut it any longer.

Recapping Last Week

All three tribes were given bundled bamboo with which to make a raft. Rupert Boneham announced that Saboga tribe's raft would be the best ever made, hoping to redeem himself from the lingering embarrassment of the dwelling he constructed in an earlier episode. With fish hooks and a spear as the reward, all three tribes set sail for victory, with Mogo Mogo and Chapera finishing first and second respectively. As promised, the losing tribe, Saboga, was then disbanded. The challenge for immunity involved a series of balance beams to be crossed, and a basket of flags to be retrieved, one by one. Rob Mariano showed amazing agility, literally flying across the beams, collecting flag after flag. Richard Hatch was also surprisingly fleet of foot, managing to gather many of his teams' flags. Things began to heat up when Sue Hawk decided to wait and confront Hatch in the challenge zone, a place designated for physical contact. What ensued was difficult to hear and happened quickly. Suffice to say, Hawk was not amused by her encounter with Hatch, and her anger continues to spill over to this week, though Hatch was voted off the show last week.

What You Don't Know

Watching one of the challenge events at home, you might wonder, "How can they possibly remember those directions?" Let me give you a behind-the-scenes look. Once you arrive at the challenge site, Jeff Probst explains the rules of the game. At times, he will walk you through the course and offer a question-and-answer period. It is of the utmost importance for you to pay close attention. Once the game begins, if you make a mistake, you're out of luck. There are no second chances or "do-overs." You are never allowed to practice a challenge, and many times the course remains a mystery, or partially out of sight.

Also, CBS yesterday announced that the winner of Survivor: All Stars will be chosen live in a two-hour finale show broadcast from Madison Square Garden on Sunday, May 9, from 8 to 10 p.m., to be followed by a one-hour live reunion show.

What's Up With Richard Hatch?

It looked to this veteran Survivor that Richard Hatch was sitting pretty last week. In fact, right up to the minute the votes were cast at Tribal Council, it looked like Colby Donaldson was the one heading home. Something happened that the viewers did not see, between the time the Mogo Mogo tribe selected Ethan Zohn and Jerri Manthey to join them and Tribal Council convened. The plan was to bring Zohn on board, then cut him loose should they lose the immunity challenge. Donaldson intervened, suggesting that Hatch had worn out his welcome, and convinced the others to go along with the vote, clearly catching Hatch off guard. Only one previous winner now remains: Zohn.

My Prediction

Sue Hawk has burned enough bridges over at Chapera to be on the chopping block tonight. She and "Big Tom" Buchanan have not seen eye to eye the entire game, and with her anger over last week's challenge still looming, my guess is that her tribe has had enough drama and will vote her out tonight if they loose immunity. Mogo Mogo might well look to send Zohn packing should they end up at Tribal Council. Zohn is a very likable guy, in great shape physically, and therefore a huge threat once the game goes to individual immunity challenges. I'd love to see him stay a while longer, but I'm afraid his days are numbered.
