PawSox prospect strikes out on Bachelorette

11:10 AM EST on Thursday, January 15, 2004

The Associated Press

A Pawtucket Red Sox prospect was cut from the lineup last night at the start of the second season of ABC's hit show The Bachelorette.

Justin Sherrod, an outfielder who is a strong candidate to for the Red Sox' Triple A Pawtucket team next season, was not chosen by bachelorette Meredith Phillips in the reality show's season premiere.

The Bachelorette pits 25 men against each other for Phillips' attention.

For its second season, the show's producers added sports professionals to the mix. Among them were Sherrod, a hockey player and football player.

In last night's episode, Phillips narrowed the field from 25 men to 15.

Sherrod, 25, who live in Orlando, Fla., said he tried out for the show because "I had nothing going on and it sounded pretty cool ...I thought I'd take a shot, live it up and see what it's all about."

He's sworn to secrecy as to the show's outcome.

Portland, Maine, fans saw plenty of outfielder Sherrod last season, when he led the Double A Sea Dogs in RBIs. Despite various ailments, including a nagging wrist injury, Sherrod played 127 games and led the team with 74 runs batted in.

He's a strong candidate to play for the PawSox this season, according to Bill Wanless, the team's vice president for public relations. But that won't be decided until spring training.
