Theater
Paris by Night at Trinity
01:00 AM EDT on Thursday, April 24, 2008
Trinity Rep wraps up its season tomorrow with the world premiere of Paris by Night, a new jazz musical from the theater’s creative head, Curt Columbus. The show, which has been in the works for more than a decade, is an interracial gay love story about an African-American tattoo artist living in Paris who falls for a young soldier named Buck.
Joe Wilson Jr., plays Sam the expatriate tattoo artist, and New York import James Royce Edwards is his lover. Rachael Warren plays the chanteuse Marie.
Columbus, who is mostly known for his translations of Chekhov, wrote the book and lyrics for the show, and Amy Warren and André Pluess, two musicians from his Chicago days, provided the tunes.
While the show’s plot is a little unconventional, Columbus said it is not so much about sexual orientation as it is about romance and love.
Paris by Night opens in previews tomorrow and runs through June 1 at Trinity Rep, 201 Washington St., Providence. Tickets are $20-$60. Call (401) 351-4242, or log on to www.trinityrep.com.
