When justice is not perfect

01:00 AM EDT on Thursday, May 15, 2008

When Bruce Reilly was in prison, serving a dozen years for murder at the Adult Correctional Institutions, he met inmates he believes were innocent. Now that he is free, Reilly hopes to get across his message that the justice system is far from perfect.

This weekend Reilly’s 1000 lbs. Guerilla theater troupe will present performances of The Exonerated, a 90-minute play that tells the true stories of six people sent to Death Row for crimes they did not commit. The show takes place tomorrow night through Sunday at Perishable Theatre. It’s part of a week-long festival of music, poetry and films dealing in part with justice issues.

The Exonerated, culled from interviews, letters, transcripts and case files, was written by actors who wanted to bring to light the plight of inmates convicted of crimes they did not commit. The show introduces us to people such as Gary, an organic farmer from the Midwest sentenced to death for murdering his parents. He was later exonerated after two motorcycle gang members were convicted of the crime.

Kerry spent 22 years on death row in Texas before being freed by DNA evidence.

Robert, an African-American horse groomer spent seven years in prison in Florida for the murder of a white woman before evidence surfaced showing that the victim was clutching the hair of a Caucasian.

The play, which Reilly will direct, had a successful off-Broadway run and has been performed at the United Nations.

The Exonerated plays Perishable Theatre, 95 Empire St., Providence, tomorrow night through Sunday. Tickets are $20 at the door. Log on to www.1000lb.org for more information.
