The 19th of June has passed, but not its celebration. Tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday, Providence celebrates Juneteenth, with theater, poetry, dance and music.

The series of shows, collectively called Liberation: A Celebration of Juneteenth, marks the day, June 19, 1865, two years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, that slaves in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free. And, naturally, they celebrated.

This weekend’s celebration begins with theater, In House Freestyle, which performs at 9 p.m. Friday at the Providence Black Repertory Company, 276 Westminster St. Admission is $10.

“We use comedy as a tool for social change and upliftment,” says Jon Mahone, a troupe member and a founder of Providence’s Juneteenth celebration. “It’s definitely comedy. It’s a good way to teach. It’s a good way to get people to let their guard down so they don’t feel like you’re preaching to them.”

The troupe has four members: Mahone, Ghislaine Jean-Mahone, Trina Korlie and Yakim Parker. The troupe responds to what’s in the news as well as ongoing issues.

“We are dealing a little bit with the election. There’s a bit about racial dynamics, integration and segregation.”

On Saturday at 7 p.m. in the CCRI Auditorium, 1 Hilton St., the headline performer is poet Taalam Acey. Admission is $15.

“When you listen to his poetry, it’s like a religious experience. He has an ability to use the spoken word to get you to feel something. What he says hits chords with people.”

Also performing that night are: Blaquelyte, a jazz fusion group; Refined 313, a gospel trio; Riders Against the Storm, a hip-hop duo; Lady D.U.B.B. (Doing the Unbelievable by Believing); and Inphynit, a poet.

On Sunday at 8 p.m., the celebration wraps up with a dance party at The Blackstone, 1005 Main St., Pawtucket. Admission is $5. The guest performer is DJ Laylo of New York City.
