Hide and Seek tackles subject of coming out
01:00 AM EDT on Thursday, June 19, 2008

Actors in Hide and Seek share stories of gay, lesbian and transgendered Rhode Islanders and their experiences before, during and after going public with their sexuality.
Hide and Seek: Coming Out Stories, a docudrama based on interviews with gay Rhode Islanders, premieres at the University of Rhode Island’s Providence campus tonight and tomorrow.
The show, written by URI student and Cranston resident Michael Miele, takes its inspiration from the work of Vagina Monologues author Eve Ensler. During the course of the play, the actors share stories of actual twentysomething gay, lesbian and transgendered Rhode Islanders and their experiences before, during and after going public with their sexuality.
The drama follows the journey of five people, who play an actual game of hide and seek, revealing more and more about themselves each time they are found.
“I wrote this piece because coming out at times can be scary,” said Miele. “I wanted to show others who are either in the closet or on their way out that they are not alone.”
The show takes place at 7:30 tonight and tomorrow at URI’s Feinstein campus, 80 Washington St., Providence. Admission is free, although donations are accepted. Call (401) 277-5206 or visit www.uri.edu/prov.
