Dancestravaganza is this weekend and next at Perishable Theatre
01:00 AM EDT on Thursday, September 4, 2008
Dance and theater meet.
The 5th annual Dancestravaganza, presented by the Theatre Expansion, is this weekend and next at Perishable Theatre, 95 Empire St., Providence.
This first weekend the show involves four dances and six dancers; next weekend it’s five dances and seven dancers. The primary piece of the show is the premiere of “Berenger’s Body.” Tim Rubel, the Theatre Expansion’s producing artistic director developed the work with the dancers in the piece, Katie Zarling and Leslie Vasquez. Rubel says the dance is inspired by the writing of the playwright Eugene Ionseco and that it “examines the breakdown of communication in contemporary society.” The work will be presented in three parts, with other dances interspersed.
Those dances include a duet by Double Shift Dance Theatre, featuring Peter Deffet and Nikki Carrara, co-producer of the show with Rubel; and solos by Rosemary Candelario and Alice Hunter. Next weekend, a third soloist will be added to the program: Ana Isabel Keilson.
The Theatre Expansion, a group of artists in theater and dance, aims to connect the two art forms through contemporary dance adaptations of both established and original theater works.
Shows are this Friday and Saturday, and next, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for Friday’s opening reception are $20, $15 for seniors, students, military personnel and Rhode Island artists. Tickets for other shows are $15 and $12, respectively. For reservations, call (401) 440-5440.
