Providence Black Rep is back
01:00 AM EST on Thursday, January 10, 2008
After being closed for two weeks to repair a collapsed ceiling, Providence Black Repertory Company will be back in business tomorrow for a night of impromptu theater, African drumming, poetry and hip-hop.
The theater, at 276 Westminster St., was forced to close its doors Dec. 27 after a section of the ceiling in its cafe let go, tearing out heating ducts and damaging instruments and technical equipment stored there. The collapse happened around 7 p.m. as Black Rep was about to host its Thursday night Afro-sonic show. Just two staff members were in the building at the time, and no one was hurt. The company lost an estimated $25,000 in revenues because of the closing. Black Rep artistic director Donald King said the repairs would cost around $50,000. Contributions to help pay for the damage are welcome.
Admission to tomorrow’s show, which runs from 5 p.m. to closing, is a suggested tax-deductible contribution of $15.
