Blithe Spirit will rise again on Broadway
01:00 AM EST on Sunday, November 23, 2008
NEW YORK (AP) — Casting is nearly complete for the Broadway revival of Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit, which will bring Angela Lansbury back to Broadway and will also star Christine Ebersole, Jayne Atkinson, Simon Jones and Rupert Everett.
The production, directed by Michael Blakemore, will begin performances Feb. 26 at the Shubert Theatre, with an opening date to be determined.
Lansbury, a four-time Tony winner, will play the dotty medium Madame Arcati who inadvertently summons from beyond the grave the first wife of an English novelist, played by Everett. Ebersole portrays the deceased helpmate, Elvira, while Atkinson is the man’s second wife, Ruth.
Blithe Spirit was a big hit in London and New York in the 1940s. It was last seen on Broadway in 1987 in a production that starred Richard Chamberlain, Blythe Danner, Judith Ivey and Geraldine Page as Madame Arcati.
