Video Games: Battle with Bourne; tour with Guitar Hero
01:00 AM EDT on Saturday, August 23, 2008
The Bourne Conspiracy serves as the banner example of how to make a good game based on a movie.
It wasn’t rushed to coincide with its source film’s release date, it offers something beyond the events of the movie, and the game play is strong enough to stand on its own.
Though Matt Damon’s likeness is nowhere to be found, the character models and voices are well-done. Each mission is either based on an action sequence from the first movie or takes place as a flashback mission covering events not seen in any of the films.
Amnesiac assassin Bourne spends most of his time taking out his enemies with a selection of guns or engaging them in bruising hand-to-hand combat. This is where the game shines brightest — Bourne’s improvisational combat techniques are among the coolest things about the films.
Takedowns are perhaps too simple to use, but they’re fun to watch and surprisingly varied.
Microsoft Xbox 360, also for Sony PlayStation 3; $59.99; Age rating: Teen
Guitar Hero: On Tour is about as faithful as a pint-size version of the series could be.
The game is packed with the Guitar Grip, an attachment that plugs into the bottom of the DS and provides the fret buttons that are so crucial to the game play; there are four buttons instead of five on this device. The grip also has a guitar pick-shape stylus, though any stylus will do.
The grip is a bit tough to master — it’s tricky to find a comfortable way to hold it, and gamers with larger fingers may find that it’s easy to hit the wrong buttons. The player slides the stylus across the touch screen instead of a strum bar. (The DS is held sideways, like a book.)
Allowing for these necessary tweaks, the game plays just like the console version. Nintendo DS; $49.99; Age rating: Everyone 10-plus
