Belichick foresees roster moves before Patriots’ opener

Patriots coach Bill Belichick says: “I don’t think it would be fair to say that there won’t be any more roster moves” before Sunday’s opener.

If his comments over the last two days are any indication, Bill Belichick is not done shuffling his roster — and he could do so again before Sunday’s game with Kansas City.

Belichick held his first Tuesday conference call of the season yesterday. In the past, Tuesdays were a day of no access, but Belichick will no longer meet with the media on Thursdays and the conference calls are a way to make up for that.

He was asked if he expects making any more moves before the season opener and left the door open that more players might be walking in and out of Gillette Stadium.

“I don’t think it would be fair to say that there won’t be any more. There definitely could be,” Belichick said.

That answer is similar to a comment Belichick made during his opening statement on Monday: “I am sure there will be more before the week is over. … I think that (the team) is a little bit of a work in progress.”

So seeing the Patriots pop up on the transaction wire won’t be a surprise. But when it comes to who it might be that’s added, specifically Ty Law, Belichick wasn’t talking.

“Right now, the only players I feel comfortable talking about are the ones that are on this team,” he said. “There are a lot of players that are not on this team and it is too long of a list to get into. If we bring someone else in, we can talk about him then, and if we don’t, then we’re going with what we have and that is what we are going with right now.”

As Belichick noted, the team will have to make a move on Monday, when Kevin Faulk returns to the team after his one-week suspension for violation of the league’s substance abuse policy.

After last Saturday’s roster cutdown, more than 600 players hit the waiver wire and open market, and teams continue to make moves, picking up players they may have had their eye on when he was drafted a couple of years ago (as was the case with the Pats’ acquiring Jason Pociask) or veterans who could fill a specific role.
