Manfredo, Clampitt head Foxwoods card
01:00 AM EDT on Tuesday, June 5, 2007
PROVIDENCE — Peter Manfredo Jr.’s next stop on his journey toward another world title shot will be at Foxwoods Resort Casino.
The Providence super middleweight, 27-4-0 with 13 knockouts, will battle a young, up-and-comer, David Banks (14-1-1, 2 KOs), who will be looking to win the biggest fight of his career in the 10-round main event of a five-card show that will be televised live on ESPN2’s Wednesday Night Fights, June 20.
Manfredo said at a news conference yesterday at Costantino’s Ristorante & Caffe that he is going to knock Banks out.
“I’ve never seen him fight, but I’m just going to stick to my game plan, do what I do, and do what I did my last fight,” said Manfredo, who is coming off a ninth-round TKO of Ted Muller (19-11-2, 9 KOs). “I believe that I’m on a different level and I just have to show that that night. I’m just going to box him, set him up with my jab and I’ll get him out of there. I’m going to get this guy out of there a little earlier than I got the last guy. I just needed the rounds the last time, so I had some fun.”
Manfredo is ranked 12th in the world by boxrec.com and 18th by the World Boxing Council. He said he is going to fight as often as possible to quickly move back up in the ranks and get another world title shot as soon as possible.
“The main goal is to be a world champion,” Manfredo said. “If Vinny Paz can get five, I’ve got to get at least one of them. I failed in the first attempt [against WBO champion Joe Calzaghe] and this is what you have to do to get right back up there. You just have to keep fighting, winning and proving yourself. This time I’ll just get the number one spot if I have to to fight again for the world title.”
Manfredo was ranked third when he lost to Calzaghe.
Banks has won his last four fights, including back-to-back victories over previously unbeaten super middleweight Elvin Ayala (16-2-0, 7 KOs). He is ranked 35th in the world by boxrec.com.
Banks told promoter Jimmy Burchfield that he is coming to Rhode Island to win.
International Women’s Boxing Federation lightweight champion Jaime Clampitt (17-4-1, 7 KOs), of Pawtucket, will fight for the IWBF junior welterweight title against Jane Couch (28-9-0, 9 KOs), of Bristol, England, in the 10-round co-main event.
Couch beat Clampitt on June 12, 2004, in a unanimous decision, in what was Ring Magazine’s 2004 Female Fight of the Year. Clampitt found out the day before that fight that her trainer and longtime friend, Robert “Tiny” Ricci, had died. She later said that she wasn’t mentally ready for the fight.
Clampitt said Couch will face a completely different fighter this time around.
“Jane is a tough, tough girl,” Clampitt said. “She is really one of the pioneers of boxing, so just to get to fight her again is great and this time it’s going to be a totally different fight.”
Burchfield is planning to have the winner of the Clampitt-Couch fight face boxing legend Christy Martin (47-5-2, 31 KOs).
“We are going to win the junior welterweight title and it’s going to be my fourth world title,” Clampitt said. “We are going to keep it in Rhode Island and we are going to keep it in the United States.”
Couch has gone 4-3 since beating Clampitt. All three of her losses were against world-class opponents in world title fights.
Clampitt dominated future boxing hall-of-famer Mia St. John (43-9-2, 18 KOs) in her last bout, easily earning a unanimous decision. Since losing to Couch, Clampitt has gone 4-1-1.
Providence light heavyweight Jarrod Tillinghast (8-0, 2 KOs), and Johnston super middleweight Angel Camacho Jr. (6-0, 4 KOs) will also fight in separate bouts, as will newly signed Classic Sports & Entertainment fighter Aaron Williams (12-0-1, 8 KOs), a nine-time U.S. national amateur champion from Las Vegas.
Tickets, priced at $55, $110 and $160 are available by calling CES at (401) 724-2253; Foxwoods at (800) 200-2882, or by visiting www.cesboxing.com or www.foxwoods.com. Two dollars of every ticket sold will go to the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
