EAST PROVIDENCE –– Not even a bogey on the final hole could prevent the team of Robert Marshalewski and Garrett Medeiros from building a two-stroke lead Tuesday in the opening round of the R.I. Golf Association’s 60th Four-Ball championship.

Marshalewski, from Crestwood, and Medeiros, from Metacomet, had seven birdies on the way to a 6-under 64 at Agawam Hunt. Medeiros had six of the birds.

Charlie Blanchard and Jason Pannone were the only team within four strokes of the leaders. They had a 66.

Three other teams, Jay and Ron Barrow, Arnout Bruins Slot and Ron Gigliodoro, and Matt D’Ambra and Anthony Mesiti, tied for third at 68. The only other teams under par, all at 69, are the teams of Ted Carey-Chip Kohn, Rick Angeli-Peter Taylor, Brad Edgerton-Luke Hyder, John Auclair-Mike Soucy and Gary McLane-David Piccerelli.

Defending champions Billy Forcier and Patrick O’Neill are in a big group at even-par 70.

The event has a new format. It is being played at 36 holes stroke play, with no cut. All 114 teams will compete again today. All will switch courses. The top-seeded teams played Agawam in the first round and move to Metacomet in the second round. The other 57 teams do the opposite.
