Division III football semifinal previews
07:22 AM EST on Tuesday, December 2, 2008
MOSES BROWN (5-4, 5-3 Division III) at TIVERTON (10-0, 8-0)
WHEN: 6 P.M.
WHERE: Tiverton High, 100 North Brayton Road, Tiverton
THE SKINNY: Tiverton is the best team Division III. The Tigers kicked off the season with a 53-0 nonleague rout of Burrillville and ended with a 31-0 nonleague rout of Central Falls on Thanksgiving morning. They shut out Moses Brown 17-0, Smithfield 41-0, and Mount Pleasant 52-0 as well. The Tigers scored 349 points, second in the state behind La Salle, and allowed only 62, the fewest of any team in Rhode Island.
Moses Brown finished 4-4 in division play, but Ponaganset forfeited its 35-0 victory over the Quakers because it used an ineligible player. That gave MB a 5-3 record and a playoff berth. “It’s not the best way to get in, but we’ll take it,” said athletics director Jeff Maidment. MB was tied with Johnston, but Johnston won the head-to-head tiebreaker, dropping the Quakers to the fourth seed.
Moses Brown can play tough defense (101 points allowed), but Tiverton has too much firepower and should win.
JOHNSTON (6-4, 5-3) at NARRAGANSETT (8-3, 6-2)
WHEN: 6 P.M.
WHERE: Chariho High, 453 Switch Road, Wood River Junction
THE SKINNY: Narragansett earned the No. 2 seed as a result of its 24-6 Thanksgiving Day triumph over East Greenwich. The Mariners’ only division losses were to Tiverton, 20-14, and Ponaganset, 23-8, and they beat Johnston, 44-38.
Johnston will have to shake off a 55-7 blowout loss at Lincoln on Thanksgiving. They had won their previous four games, among them a 22-21 escape at Ponaganset.
This could be another high-scoring game. Narragansett has scored 294 points, Johnston 238. The Mariners have allowed 195, the Panthers 212. Narragansett should be a slight favorite.
