Division I football semifinal previews
07:29 AM EST on Tuesday, December 2, 2008
NORTH KINGSTOWN (8-3, 5-3 Division I) at LA SALLE (10-0, 8-0)
WHEN: 6 P.M.
WHERE: Cimini Stadium at La Salle Academy, 612 Academy Ave., Providence
THE SKINNY: Only one team has come close to beating La Salle this season. Portsmouth lost by seven points (35-28) on Oct. 3. The Rams beat North Kingstown by 14 points (21-7) and Barrington by 14 (27-13). They are rolling into the playoffs having scored 107 points in their last two games, a 53-20 blitz of St. Raphael and a 54-27 bashing of Thanksgiving archrival East Providence. Kendall Perry has scored 16 touchdowns, Gus DelFarno 13, Joe Charest 8 and Damon DiVozzi 8.
North Kingstown is seeking its first victory against any of the 2008 semifinalists. In addtition to La Salle, the Skippers lost to Barrington (33-23) and Portsmouth (27-20).They can light up the scoreboard, however. They have scored 307 points and scored at least 33 points in five consecutive midseason games. Quarterback David D’Errico has scored 27 touchdowns but will need help from his teammates to penetrate the stingy La Salle defense.
This looks like La Salle’s year.
BARRINGTON (9-2, 6-2) at PORTSMOUTH (9-1, 7-1)
WHEN: 7 P.M.
WHERE: Portsmouth High, 120 Education Lane, Portsmouth
THE SKINNY: That seven-point loss to La Salle is the only blemish on Portsmouth’s record, and the Patriots are riding a six-game winning streak in which they defeated Barrington (21-7) and North Kingstown (27-20). They trounced Middletown (48-0) on Thanksgiving morning. The Patriots field the best defense in the division and have allowed only 104 points. Remington Alves is the Patriots’ chief scoring threat.
Barrington’s only losses were to Portsmouth and La Salle. The Eagles won their first five before crossing the Mt. Hope Bridge to play Portsmouth. They posted two wins on either side of the loss to La Salle. They are strong on both sides of the line, ranking third in scoring (286) and third in points allowed (123). Mike Reed with 21 touchdowns is the player to watch.
This game should be the feature attraction on Aquidneck Island tonight, and Patriots fans should go home happy.
