Pawtucket’s playoff roster an iffy matter

PAWTUCKET — When the Pawtucket Red Sox get their first taste of the International League playoffs in five years on Wednesday night, Jonathan Van Every isn’t quite sure who’ll be joining him in the lineup.

As the PawSox know all too well, their roster is always in flux. Even with the playoffs a few days away. The Sox have seen 52 players suit up this season, 25 position players and 27 pitchers. Who is still in town later this week is anyone’s guess, especially with major league rosters allowed to expand tomorrow.

Van Every has been one of the team’s most consistent players through this playoff drive but, like all of his teammates, he’d be thrilled to skip the postseason and try to help the Boston Red Sox secure a playoff berth.

“We’ll just let the chips fall where they land,” said Van Every, who leads the PawSox with 26 home runs. “We can’t control who we have and who we don’t but every guy in this room is a professional and is more than capable of helping us win.”

Pawtucket manager Ron Johnson sits in the position of not knowing which players he’ll have at his disposal when the Sox begin their best-of-five series with Scranton. When he was told he could possibly begin the playoffs with Michael Bowden and/or Clay Buchholz in his starting rotation, Johnson laughed and said, “Sign me up!”

Bowden started for the Red Sox at Fenway last night but it’s unclear if he’ll remain with the team or return to McCoy. Buchholz threw seven shutout innings in his second start for Double A Portland last night and he could remain with the Sea Dogs when they begin Eastern League playoffs this week but he could be shifted to Pawtucket.

Johnson said he hasn’t spoken with anyone in the organization about either possibility but he’s learned to be prepared for plenty of roster movement at all times.

“Of all the years, this might be the most interesting for me to know just who is and who isn’t going to be here,” Johnson said. “It’s our playoffs but our focus is still whatever we can do to provide help for that team to win in Fenway Park. I certainly don’t say, ‘We can’t lose this guy or that guy.’ ”

Despite a revolving door that’s seen the likes of Bowden, Buchholz, Justin Masterson, Jeff Bailey, Jed Lowrie and Brandon Moss all spend a considerable amount of time with the PawSox, the team kept rolling along. Johnson says a lot of that credit goes not only to the players who’ve moved on to the majors but more importantly talents like Van Every, Chris Carter, Joe Thurston and Charlie Zink. Carter, Thurston, Zink and Bailey were all chosen International League all-stars last week.

“We’ve had a lot of guys who deserve to be called up. A lot of guys have had very good years here,” said Johnson.

Van Every said that when the playoffs do arrive, the PawSox will be ready. He participated in playoff runs for both Kinston (N.C.) in Single A and Akron (Ohio) in Double A. “We won it all both times. It’s great to win any championship,” he said.

Johnson said the Red Sox organization has promised that “they won’t devastate our ballclub” with call-ups and he’s confident the PawSox will be strong enough to make a good run. Van Every agrees.

“You can’t control who goes up or who goes down,” said Van Every. “I’ll just prepare for playing for Pawtucket and I think we’ll be fine.”
