Connecticut slams Rhode Island in All-Star football contest
09:05 AM EDT on Monday, June 30, 2008
Rhode Island played on even terms for most of the first half, but Connecticut scored 10 points in the final 90 seconds before halftime and never looked back as the home forces rolled to a 31-10 victory in the 10th annual Rhode Island-Connecticut High School Senior All-Star football game Saturday night at Rentschler Field.
The victory was the sixth straight for Connecticut and seventh overall in the annual interstate All-Star game.
Rhode Island had tied the score at 7-7 on a touchdown with just under two minutes remaining in the first half. But only three plays after the ensuing kickoff, Connecticut scored on a 31-yard touchdown pass.
A Rhode Island fumble on the ensuing series gave Connecticut a chance to boost its halftime lead to 17-7 with a 34-yard field goal in the final few seconds of the half. Connecticut made it 24-7 four minutes into the third quarter.
