Choices of great RIIL baseball games abound
10:43 AM EDT on Friday, May 2, 2008
With only a little over two weeks remaining in the R.I. Interscholastic League regular season, a lot of games these days have playoff implications. But on Tuesday, high school baseball fans will really have a tough time deciding where to travel for the biggest game of the day.
Some people would say you have to consider a meeting between the two teams that have combined for the past five Division I state titles the major contest of the day. If that’s the way you think, you’ll need to head to Cranston, where Cranston West will host Hendricken.
But if you want to see the only undefeated team in Rhode Island playing one of the other top-five teams in Division I, set your GPS for Portsmouth, where the undefeated Patriots will take on Moses Brown.
Meanwhile, fans in South County will have a chance to see both two of the top-five teams in Division I and a great regional rivalry as North Kingstown and South Kingstown meet in a 6:30 game at Old Mountain Field in South Kingstown.
If Mother Nature cooperates with good weather, it will be a great day for high school baseball.
Skippers-Falcons tomorrow
Of course, the fans will not have to wait until Tuesday for a big game.
Tomorrow afternoon, North Kingstown, which handed Hendricken its first loss of the season last Saturday, will be looking for another big weekend victory when the Skippers play host to Cranston West.
Little separation
Portsmouth, undefeated in Interscholastic League action, coming into today’s game with East Providence is the unquestionable leader for the top seed in the Division I playoffs, but when it comes to Division II, there are a lot of questions.
With its 11-0 record, Portsmouth is nearly 100 percentage points ahead of Hendricken and South Kingstown in the race for the number-one Division I playoff seed. Hendricken and South Kingstown come into today’s action with 11-1 records. But in Division II, three teams are separated by only a few percentage points at the top of the seeding race.
Mt. Hope went into yesterday’s game against Juanita Sanchez leading the Division II seeding race with a 10-2 record, but the Huskies where only a few points ahead of Prout, which was 9-2 before yesterday’s game against Classical, and Central, which is 8-2.
Mt. Hope is not scheduled to meet any of the other top-ranked teams in their final six regular-season games, but Central and Prout meet twice next week.
Pilgrim in middle
Pilgrim, with a 5-7 record, is near the middle of the pack in the battle for one of the 24 Division I playoff berths and it’s a safe bet that Patriots coach Ed Colvin hopes the four members of his team who played on the Shields Post team that made a surprise run to last summer’s state American Legion title can work some of that late-season magic in the Interscholastic League this spring.
Shields, which is managed by Jim Foster, father of URI baseball coach Jim Foster, finished only fourth during the regular season last summer, but then performed a late-season turnaround en route to the state crown.
Currently Pilgrim players Kevin Stenhouse, Mark Melchiori, Mike Nadiger and Sean Furney were members of that state championship team. Of course, there were three of last year’s Pilgrim stars who are now playing in college, Paul Vatter — Rhode Island College; Garrett Stenhouse — Bentley; and Anthony Dupre — CCRI, who helped the Shields title drive, and another member of the Shields team, Sam Sager, is playing a major role in Moses Brown’s drive for a top-five Division I playoff seeds. Mike Moise of La Salle and Tyler Baum of Cranston East are also members of the Shields team.
