PROVIDENCE — Apparently one year was all that Hendricken wanted to spend not reigning as the Rhode Island boys high school outdoor track king.

The Hawks, who won nine consecutive state titles before being dethroned by North Kingstown last year, regained the crown yesterday as they rolled to a 25-point margin of victory over second-place East Greenwich at the Interscholastic League state meet at Brown Stadium.

Despite capturing only one individual title and no relay championships, the Hawks used their depth to amass 79 points. The Avengers took second with 54, followed by Hope with 51 and North Kingstown with 44.

The championship was Hendricken’s 21st since the Hawks won their first outdoor crown in 1979.

Nationally ranked hammer thrower Mike Gama gave Hendricken its only individual championship with a 219-11 effort, good for a 15-foot margin of victory. Gama’s victory led a 13-point effort by Hendricken in the hammer as Nick Resendes placed fifth and Mark Conklin sixth.

Although Gama was Hendricken’s only individual champion, the Hawks scored at least four points in 9 of the 16 individual events and had top-six finishers in all three relays.

Second-place finishes by Nick Casbarro in the pole vault, Bronson Venable in the 3,000-meter run and Ryan Marcus in the 400 added 24 points to the Hendricken total.

Hope’s Matt Washington was the indidivudal star of the day with victories in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter runs. Washington also teamed with Matt Wento, Tamba Benjamin and Robin Cameron for the title in the 4x100 relay.

La Salle’s Neal Rooney, who also is an All-State football player, won both the javelin and shot put with a 190-01 effort in the javelin and a 52-07.25 in the shot. North Kingstown’s Kevin Alexander also won two titles, with victories in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles.

The other individual titles were won by East Greenwich’s Mark Feigen in the 800-meter run, Andrew Springer in the 1,500 meters, East Greenwich’s Nick Ross in the 3,000, Woonsocket’s Chris Penso in the high jump, Middletown’s Jacob Mathews in the pole vault, Smithfield’s Andrew Registad in the long jump, Lincoln’s Aaron Sabatino in the triple jump and Chariho’s Antonio Asermelly in the discus.

Alexander also led North Kingstown to the title in the 4x 400 relay, teaming with Andrew Buresh, Rory Farrell and Nate Wigton.
