Girls track championship: Last-gasp dash gives La Salle its first-ever outdoor title

PROVIDENCE — Jeanne Mack led the way, but it was Emily Barrett, Margie Thorsen, Alyssa Limperis and Lauren Cardarelli who put the finishing touches on La Salle’s drive to its first girls outdoor state track championship.

With La Salle trailing defending state champion Classical by a few points coming into the final event of the day — the 4x 400 yard relay — Barrett, Thorsen, Limperis and Cardarelli teamed-up to capture the title and gave the Rams the points they needed for a 2 ½ point margin of victory.

The 10 points for the relay title gave La Salle a final total of 94 ½ point compared to 92 for Classical. South Kingstown was third with 78 and East Greenwich was fourth with 43.

Earlier in the day Mack thought she might be able to leave work early, but when it came down to helping La Salle win its first state crown the Rams distance ace didn’t have any problem working right to final second of her high school career.

“It was hot and humid so my coach told me if we didn’t need it I wouldn’t be running the 3,000. But obviously we needed it. We were down by a little,” said Mack.

Mack closed out her sensational high school career, at least on Rhode Island soil, by capturing the 3,000 crown with a great kick over the final 200 yards. That completed a distance triple for Harvard-bound Rams star as she had captured the 800 and 1,500 earlier in the day.

She also combined with Jean Christensen, Nicole Cocozza and Christina Marcdaccio for the victory in the 4x800 meter relay.

Although Mack’s 30 points for the three individual crowns and the 20 points for the two relay titles accounted for the majority of the La Salle points, the Rams also received big scoring contributions from juniors Brittany Power and Emily Barrett. Power collected 16 points with second-places finishes in the long jump and triple jumps and Barrett registered 12 points with a second in the 300 hurdles and a fourth in the 100-meter hurdles.

Classical’s drive for a second straight title was led by senior weight star Victoria Flowers and the Jusme sisters, Micky and Didi. Flowers gave the Purple 30 points with victories in the shot put, discus and weight throw. Didi Jusme registered 28 points with victories in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles and a second in the 100-meter dash. Micky Jusme won both the long jump and triple jump and finished third in the 100.

East Greenwich three-sport star Alexa Monti won both the 100 and 200-meter runs, highlighted by a meet record effort of 12.12 in the 100.

Cranston West’s Leigh Petranoff rolled to another title in the javelin with a toss of 144-0, which was 15-feet better than her closest competition.

The other individual state titles were won by West Warwick’s Felicia Terwilliger in the high jump, South Kingstown’s Jessica Graham in the pole vault and Westerly’s Rachelle Sylvia in the 400-meter dash.

The South Kingstown quartet of Candace Hazard, Amanda Norman, Amanda Graham and Marissa Norman captured the title in the 4x100 relay.
