TORONTO –– As Red Sox shortstop Julio Lugo was on a plane heading back to Boston yesterday to continue his rehab from a torn quadriceps, Jed Lowrie was taking flight in a different manner.

The rookie shortstop has been nothing but solid for the Red Sox since he replaced Lugo on July 12, and proved it once again as his solo home run in the top of the 11th inning propelled Boston to a 6-5 victory over Toronto at the Rogers Centre.

After the win, which brings the road trip record to 4-2 with three games remaining at New York, Lowrie’s home-run ball was sitting on the top shelf of his locker at the Rogers Centre.

“It was a big thrill, especially at this time of the year,” he said. “Every win counts, but every win now counts that much more.”

Lowrie, a switch-hitter, crushed a 1-1 slider from Brandon League and deposited it into the visitor’s bullpen for his second home run of the season, and first from the left side of the plate.

“Jed Lowrie, again, came up with a huge hit,” Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. “He continues to impact the game. We’ll take it. We need it. He’s stepped in and has become a valuable member of our club.”

Lowrie entered the game 3-for-17 in his last five games, and after his 1-for-5 performance yesterday, he’s now hitting .299 with 32 RBI for the Red Sox this season. And, his defense has been solid, too.

Pauley in for Aardsma

Pitcher David Pauley, who was recalled from Pawtucket on Saturday to replace David Aardsma (groin), joined the club yesterday. The right-hander is 14-4 with a 3.55 ERA in 25 starts for the PawSox this season and will be used in long relief. This is his third stint with Boston this season. Aardsma and Lugo have returned to Boston. Both will have a MRI on today.

Lowell to join Sox in NYC

Sox third baseman Mike Lowell (oblique) is scheduled to meet the club in New York. According to Francona, Lowell will speak with team doctor Tom Gill today before a decision is made. Lowell has been rehabbing at home in Miami while the Red Sox have been on the road.
