Playoff-bound PawSox wait for their roster to get thinner
07:47 AM EDT on Friday, August 29, 2008
NEW YORK -- The PawSox have clinched a playoff berth in the International League playoffs. When the first round begins next week, manager Ron Johnson could be without some of his talent when major-league roster expands on Monday.
The Red Sox will immediately add a pitcher and catcher. David Ross, who the Sox recently signed as a free agent, will probably be the catcher, and Chris Smith could be added to the bullpen.
Obviously the jobs of the minor-league affiliates are to make the parent clubs better. But manager Terry Francona doesn’t want to decimate the PawSox.
“I do think we need to be respectful of their season,” Francona said. “Saying that, I don’t think we ever want to sacrifice a game here. We do care. Maybe we can wait, but if we need somebody, we can get them.”
