Jan Gregory: Dog Notes: Hunt championship tests talent of region’s top pointing dogs

Some of the best woodcock and grouse hunting dogs in the Northeast will hit the woods at the Arcadia Management Area in Exeter starting at 7 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 29, as the Southern New England Woodcock Championship gets under way.

This annual event, a Grand National Invitational points trial, is sponsored by the South County Field Trial Club and is co-hosted by the Rhode Island Grouse Dog Club.

Spectators are invited to follow on foot as the dogs hunt the grounds of Arcadia for native woodcock and grouse. Dogs are judges on their ability to find and point birds.

Judges will be Tony Bly of Milan, N.H., and Mike Best of St. John’s, New Brunswick, Canada.

Preceding the championship, on Thursday, Aug. 28, will be the Joel Collier Derby Classic for 2-year-old dogs. Judges for that event are Rick Seeley of Woodland, Maine, and Phil Woody of Hope Valley.

CGC Tests

Canine Good Citizen testing, sponsored by Rhode Island Kennel Club, will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at the K-9 Connection, 60 Minnesota Ave., Warwick.

Preregistration is required. Deadline for registration is Wednesday, Aug. 27. Testing is limited to 30 dogs.

To participate, dogs must be more than six months old. Handlers must show proof of a current rabies certificate and dog license.

Summer camp

Camp Best Friends day camp for youngsters and their dogs will hold its final session this summer, from Monday through Friday, at the Canine Training Center, 71A Wheaton Ave., Rehoboth.

For youngsters who don’t have a canine friend of their own, dogs will be available to borrow on a limited basis.

Events include dog training, nature walks, agility, rally, games, guest speakers, a dog show, barbecue and hay rides.

•Delmyra Kennel in Exeter will start a series of beginner agility classes on Tuesday at 6 p.m., and Come and Stay classes at 7:15. Advanced agility classes start Monday, Aug. 25, at 6 p.m., followed by heeling classes at 7:15.

•The K9 Connection is holding drop-in rally run-throughs are held Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. Drop-in agility run-throughs are held Fridays at 7:30 p.m.

•The Canine Training Center, 71A Wheaton Ave., Rehoboth, will hold drop-in rally classes Mondays at 6 p.m., followed by advanced obedience classes at 7:30.

Breed-handling and junior-showmanship classes will be held Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m., followed by beginner/puppy obedience classes at 7:30.

On Saturdays at 10:30 a.m., beginner/puppy obedience classes will be held.

• The Key Dog Training Club of Rhode Island is holding novice and open obedience classes every Tuesday at 3 p.m., followed by beginner and puppy classes at 5:30 and 6:30, open and utility at 7:15, and novice rally at 8. Classes are held at Rocky Hill Grange, 1340 South County Trail, East Greenwich.
