Wire fox terrier struts its stuff and tops field at Kennel Club show

More than 1,400 dogs were entered in last weekend’s South County Kennel Club breed and obedience shows, held Saturday and Sunday at Thayer Arena in Warwick.
On Saturday, April 26, Best In Show winner, topping a field of 692 entrants was Ch. Tamedale Orinoco, a 4-year-old wire fox terrier, owned by Norman and Lynda Kenney of Westford, Mass.
Challenging the terrier for the top prize was a local dog. Ch. Teabear’s Ternabout’s Fair Play, a 3-year-old Japanese chin owned and bred by L.J. “Kip” Kopatch of Greene. The chin represented the Toy Group in the Best In Show ring.
High in Trial in Obedience from the Open A class was Majestic Siobhans Irish Jig CD, a 3-year-old standard poodle owned by Joan Brenneke of Dartmouth, Mass. The poodle earned a score of 198 out of a possible 200.
High Combined obedience honors went to OTCH Beau Geste Saranade In Blu UDX7, a 9-year-old Australian shepherd owned by Robert Amen of Stamford, Conn. The Aussie had a combined score of 197.5 from the Open B and Utility B classes.
At Sunday’s show, where 725 dogs were entered, Ch. Cross B’s Best Of The Blues, a 3-year-old chow chow owned by Camille Gagnon of Newport, N.H., was judged to be the Best In Show.
In obedience, High In Trial honors went to Valkyries Thats My Boy UDX, an 8-year-old Weimaraner, owned by Richard Cashman and Kathy Reilly of Middleboro, Mass. The Weim earned a 199.5 in the Open B class.
High Combined honors went to a local dog.
Ch. Crossroad’s Trew Legend UDX, an 8-year-old Belgian Malinois owned by Teri Desrosiers of Johnston, earned a High Combined score of 199 from the Open B and Utility B classes.
Fundraiser
Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter will host a flea market fundraiser on May 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Warwick Animal Shelter, 250 Service Rd. (off Jefferson Boulevard), Warwick.
Items for sale include will include household items, books, baked goods, homemade dog treats, jewelry and Friends logo apparel. The shelter will also be open for potential adopters.
Reserved spaces are available for a $15. Setup is between 9 and 9:30 a.m.

Money from the event will benefit the Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter, a nonprofit organization helping animals at the shelter.
Training classes
• A four-week series of beginner agility classes starts Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Dogzdowntown, 1218 Eddy St., Providence. For information, call (401) 785-3649.
• Family Dog Training will hold a six-week series of basic obedience classes on Tuesday nights, starting May 13, at Gold Dust Farm, Reservoir Road, Chepachet.

• Obedience Tales Dog Training School, 1361 Mineral Spring Ave., North Providence, is starting a series of puppy kindergarten classes on Friday at 6 p.m.

•The K9 Connection holds obedience run-throughs are held every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. Come and Stay classes are held on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. Attention classes are held on Thursdays at 7 p.m. followed by rally run-throughs at 7:30, and breed handling at 8.
Drop-in competition heeling class and run-throughs start at 7:30 on Monday nights, and drop-in agility run-throughs are held on Fridays at 7:30 p.m.
Drop-in heeling classes are held on Wednesdays at 7 p.m., preceded by open and utility class at 6.
Canine massage is available by appointment.

Breed-handling and junior showmanship classes will be held on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. followed by beginner/puppy obedience classes at 7:30.
On Thursdays, puppy obedience classes will be held at 6:15 p.m. followed by advanced obedience at 7:15.
On Saturdays at 10:30 a.m., beginner/puppy obedience classes will be held.
