Dog Notes -- Sussex spaniel gathers spotlight at Providence County club show

07:57 AM EDT on Monday, August 4, 2008

By JAN GREGORY
The Providence Journal

Ch. Erinhill Cpnwy Mr. Fuzzywrinkles, a 2-year-old Sussex spaniel owned by Cheryl Curtis of Franklin, Mass., and bred by Curtis and Constance Holt-Grenier, was named Best In Show at Providence County Kennel Club’s annual American Kennel Club-sanctioned show held July 26 at East Providence High School. More than 620 dogs were entered in the one-day show.

Best In Show judge was Gilbert Kahn of Newport. Show chairman was John Fitzgerald of Wickford.

New breed accepted

The Dogue de Bordeaux, sometimes referred to as the “French Mastiff”, is the latest breed made eligible for AKC registration and competition in the Working Group at shows.

The breed, among the most ancient of purebred dogs, could often be found guarding the vineyards or butcher shops in France; they were also used for hunting large game such as bear and wild boar. It wasn’t until the 1960s that the breed made its first appearance in the United States.

The AKC welcomed six new breeds into the Miscellaneous Class last month: Bluetick Coonhound, Cane Corso, Cesky Terrier, Icelandic Sheepdog, Leonberger, and Norwegian Lundehund.
