Dog Notes: Owners Conyngham, Unsworth among winners at Tri-State event

After a 17-year hiatus, Tri-State Field Trial Club held its spring field trial last weekend at the Peace Dale Shooting Preserve in Peace Dale. Sixty dogs were entered in the two-day event.

Local winners included Centerville’s Awsum Bill, an English pointer owned and handled by Sarah Conyngham. Bill earned first place in the Open Puppy stake. First place in the Open Derby stake went to Karen Unsworth’s Misty Meadow Rosebud, also a pointer. Dennis Vescuso’s Chestnut Hill Jake, an English setter, took first place in the Amateur Puppy stake. In the Amateur Gun Dog stake, third place went to Penny Pinecone, a Brittany owned and handled by Tom Meade.

Fundraisers

•The Potter League will hold a Heart & Sole Walk for the Animals on Sunday, June 8, at Glen Park in Portsmouth. Proceeds will benefit the animals at the Middletown shelter.

Registration starts at 10:30 a.m. followed by the walk at noon. Awards will be presented at 1 p.m. followed by pet contests at 1:30.

•The RISPCA will hold a benefit car wash today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Sam’s Club, 1098 Fall River Ave., Seekonk. Cost is $5 per car. Proceeds will benefit the animals at the RISPCA.

•“Cause for Paws,” a classic car show for the benefit of the Warwick Animal Shelter, will be held Sunday, June 8, at Sam’s Club, 25 Pace Blvrd., Warwick.

All proceeds benefit the Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter, a nonprofit humane organization, and will be used to make improvements to the Warwick Animal Shelter and for spay/neuter and emergency veterinary assistance for cats and dogs housed at the shelter.

Antique cars, classics to 1978, rods, muscle cars and all year Corvettes are invited. Registration is from 9 a.m. to noon with free goody bags to the first 100 entries. The entry fee is $15 per car. Rain date is Sunday, June 29.

Trophies will be awarded at 2 p.m. in 24 classes including Best of Show, Peoples Choice and Best Club Participation.

•The Little Rhodie Bully Breed Club will hold a one-year birthday celebration/fundraiser today from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Cranston Country Club, 69 Burlingame Rd., Cranston. Cost is $25 per person.

Donations will benefit bully breeds housed in Rhode Island animal shelters.

Training classes

•Providence Animal Rescue League, 34 Elbow St., Providence, is offering obedience classes including Basic Manners, Beyond the Basics, and AKC-certified Canine Good Citizen. These classes are open to all breeds.

•The Canine Training Center, 71A Wheaton Ave., Rehoboth, will hold drop-in rally classes on Mondays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. followed by advanced obedience at 7:30. Breed-handling will be held on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. followed by junior handling classes at 7:30.

Puppy/beginner obedience classes will be held Saturdays at 10:30 a.m.

•The K9 Connection holds obedience run every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. Come and Stay classes are held on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. Attention classes are held on Thursdays at 7 p.m. followed by rally run-throughs at 7:30, and breed handling at 8.

Drop-in competition heeling class and run-throughs start at 7:30 on Monday nights, and drop-in agility run-throughs are held on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. Drop-in heeling classes are held on Wednesdays at 7 p.m., preceded by open and utility class at 6.

Canine massage is available by appointment.

•The Key Dog Training Club of Rhode Island is holding novice and open obedience classes every Tuesday at 3 p.m., followed by beginner and puppy classes at 5:30 and 6:30, open and utility at 7:15, and novice rally at 8. Classes are at Rocky Hill Grange, 1340 South County Trail, East Greenwich.

Rhode Island Kennel Club will hold its annual awards dinner tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. at Ribs & Co., 1383 Atwood Ave., Johnston. Dinner will follow.
