English pointer steals show with tenacity
01:00 AM EDT on Sunday, April 20, 2008
Chasehill Little Bud, an English pointer owned by John Stolgitis of Ashaway, and handled by Mike Flewelling of Holden, Maine, was named top dog at last weekend’s Region 1 Amateur Walking Shooting Dog Championship held at Arcadia Management Area in Exeter.
Runner-up was Keystone Red Rage, an English setter owned and handled by Craig Peters of Rising Sun, Md.
Both dogs pointed numerous quail on the one-hour course but Bud’s intensity and relationship with his handler couldn’t be beaten.
Thirty-six dogs were entered in the three-day event. Judges were Dave Marshall of Hope Valley, and Dom Preite of Franklinville, N.J.
Championship chairman was Richard Giuliano of Hope. Assisting were Monique Giuliano, Carl Lufkin, Richie Frisella, Bill and Claudia McNamee, Elias Richardson, Dave O’Brien and Stacy Goode.
In attendance from the Rhode Island DEM’s Forest Environment Division were Ed McGovern and Jay Aron.
PCKC, RIKC shows
Judy Colon’s Weimaraner, Ch. Colsidex Seabreeze Perfect Fit, was named Best In Show at Providence County Kennel Club’s annual spring show held last Saturday at Thayer Arena in Warwick. The 4-year-old Weimaraner, from Colsidex Kennels in Foster, had previously been named Sporting Group winner at the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club show in February. The Weim is co-owned by Colon and Ellen Charles and Alessandra Folz of Woodstock, Conn.
Giving Perfect Fit a run for her money in the Best In Show ring was another local dog, Ch. Teabear’s Ternabout’s Fair Play, a Japanese chin, owned and bred by L.J. Kip Kopatch of Greene. Fair Play was the top dog in the Toy Group.
Last Sunday, Rhode Island Kennel Club held its first of two back-to-back shows, at Thayer Arena. Best In Show winner this day was an Otterhound, Ch. Scentasia’s Shake Rattle N Roll, owned by Steve and Cathy Glenn of Shendoah, Va.
Representing the sporting group in Best In Show ring was Ch. Reidwood Red Alert, an English setter owned by Georgette Perry and Henry and Nancy Tuthill of Portsmouth.
Last Monday, at RIKC’s second show, Best In Show winner was Ch. Kilohana’s Fenway Faithful, a golden retriever owned by Paul Silva and Marilyn Brown of East Thetford, Vt. Back in the spotlight again, challenging the golden for the top placement, was Kopatch’s Ch. Teabear’s Ternabout’s Fair Play.
Art show today
The Rhode Island SPCA and fosteringArts.org are sponsoring “Paw”traits 2008, an exhibit and sale of portraits of rescued shelter animals and an exhibit and sale of Marvelous Marvin’s original watercolor paintings. (Marvin, a black Labrador retriever who paints with his tail, is the mascot for the RISPCA.)
Proceeds from this event benefit the RISPCA’s Marvin Fund, which helps defray veterinary and medical costs of animals in need.
The opening reception will be held at the RISPCA, 186 Amaral St., Riverside, today from 1-3 p.m. The exhibit will remain open for viewing during shelter hours until May 17.
