Arnold Bailey, Collectors’ Corner: Wagner, Ruth, Williams cards headline Hall’s auction

01:00 AM EDT on Sunday, September 28, 2008

A collection of things collectors should know about trading cards, a baseball team and baby photos, all from the distant past, plus sports and non-sport shows in the near future:

VINTAGE CARDS: Collectors of vintage baseball cards will find great additions to their collections at the next Hall’s Nostalgia auction on Friday night, when the bidding starts at 7 after a 5 o’clock preview at the Arlington, Mass., Knights of Columbus hall.

Topping the 359-lot catalog during Hall’s 304th public auction are a 1910 American Caramel card picturing Honus Wagner, an 1887 Old Judge cigarettes issue of Pud Galvin and a 1933 Goudey card of Babe Ruth. Also sure to attract interest are an 1997 Old Judge cabinet card of Buck Ewing, and several 1910 T206 white border and T205 gold border issues, most in remarkable condition considering their age.

Among post-World War II cards are a 1959 Fleer number 68 Ted Williams card (the rare issue in that 80-card set), Bowman cards from 1948 through 1955, and a 1961 Golden Press set still in its booklet. Non-card items include a 1910 New England League scorecard, a 1972 President’s All-Time Baseball Team booklet signed by Richard Nixon, and an 1890 Boston city map that includes the former site of the Braves home field.

Non-sport items include a photos signed by many movie stars including Elizabeth Taylor and James Stewart, and many cards such as Tarzan and Zorro issues. Check the www.hallsnostalgia.com site for a full list, contact info and absentee bid rules.

HOME OF THE BRAVES: The Boston Braves Historical Society gathers for a 17th reunion on Sunday, Oct. 12, almost 60 years to the day that their beloved team lost the1948 World Series and began a strange journey that soon led them out of Boston to Milwaukee and eventually to Atlanta.

The program features a reunion dinner at the Brookline, Mass., Holiday Inn from 1 to 5 p.m. following an 11:30 a.m. tour of the area of Boston that used to be Braves Field, but where little except memories of the old ballpark remains.

The lineup of former players expected to be on hand includes Clint Conatser, an outfielder who, at age 87, is one of the few surviving members of that ‘48 Braves team which won the final league championship for a franchise in Boston that dates back to 1871. The Braves dropped the World Series to Cleveland, with the deciding game on Oct. 11, 1948. (Other surviving Braves are Alvin Dark, Danny Litwhiler, Johnny Antonelli and Ray Martin, the latter a Norwood, Mass., native.)

Once again, business manager George Altison and his BBHA colleagues have an interesting program and the returning players roster includes pitchers Gene Conley and Norm Roy, shortstop Johnny Logan, and second baseman Roy Hartsfield. Tickets for the buffet dinner are $45 each and must be reserved by Oct. 5 via mail to: Boston Braves Historical Association, P.O. Box 5668, Marlboro, MA 01752.

LITTLE BIG PAPI: Topps and Team Baby entertainment have joined to produce trading cards of baseball stars that feature their baby photos. Included are David Ortiz of the Red Sox, transforming the slugger known as “Big Papi” into “Little Papi.”

Also in the promotion are the Yankees’ Johnny Damon, the Mets’ David Wright and the Dodgers’ Russell Martin. The cards are available only in Major League Baseball-themed Team Baby Entertainment DVD’s at Toys R’ Us and Babies R’ Us.

There are some historical precedents. For its 1972 and 1973 baseball cards, Topps used boyhood photos of several baseball stars. Also, the Exhibit Supply Company used baby photos of movie stars for a “Then And Now” series of penny arcade cards in the late 1940s and early ‘50s.

THURSDAY SHOW: Paul and Alex Mancini continue the long tradition of first-Thursday-of-the-month sports collectors shows this week (Oct. 2) at the Kelly Gazzerro VFW hall in Cranston (1418 Plainfield St.). Showtime is 6 to 9 p.m.

NON-SPORT SHOW: Harry Martin’s My Mummy Productions has a non-sports show – featuring non-sport cards, comics, toys and other collectibles — today from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the South Attleboro, Mass., Knights of Columbus hall (304 Highland Ave., Route 123).
