Decked-out Patriots fans admitted free to show
01:00 AM EDT on Saturday, August 30, 2008
A collection of things for collectors to do as the shows and signings schedule heats up while the late summer weather cools down.
LABOR DAY SHOW: If you’re a collector who’s also a New England Patriots fan, you can get free admission to Douglas Keating’s annual Labor Day holiday show on Monday at the Mansfield, Mass., Holiday Inn (Forbes Blvd. & Route 140). All you need to do is wear a Pats’ jersey or cap, and you can pass by the admission table with your wallet intact. (Kids age 8-and-under always get in free.) But don’t pass the table too quickly, because an autographed 8-x-10 photo of a Patriots legend will be given to the first 50 attendees who ask for one. The 8:45 a.m.-to-2:45 p.m. show has been expanded to 85 dealers’ tables and there will be hourly door prizes and free packs of cards. Check www.cardboardpromotions.com for updates.
HALL’S AUCTION: The 302nd in a long-running series of public auctions is on tap for Friday as Hall’s Nostalgia puts close to 400 lots of sports cards and memorabilia, plus some non-sport collectibles, up for bid at the Arlington, Mass., Knights of Columbus Hall (15 Winslow St.). Highlights are a full ticket for the 1946 World Series (Game Three) at Fenway Park, a 1903 Pirates scorecard, a 1922 American Caramel rookie card of Woonsocket native and Hall of Famer Gabby Hartnett, a 1953 Topps Satchel Paige card, a 1969 Red Sox scouting report on Dwight Evans, a prototype six-pack of never-issued Ted Williams Budweiser beer, and many unopened boxes of cards. Auctioneer Denis Briand starts the bidding at 7 p.m. after a 5 p.m. preview. For absentee bidding rules, check www.hallsnostalgia.com.
RICE SIGNING: Jim Rice, one of the best American League hitters during his 16 seasons with the Red Sox, will sign autographs Sept. 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Your Sports Memorabilia Store, in Newport (170 Thames St.). The 1978 A.L. Most Valuable Player, Rice offered a glimpse of his future as a hitter when earned rookie of the year, most valuable player and triple-crown honors in 1974 with the Pawtucket Red Sox. The PawSox are among the strongest advocates of Rice’s election to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Currently, he’s a studio analyst with NESN’s broadcasting team. Check www.yoursportsmemorabiliastore.com for details.
RONDO SIGNING: Rajon Rondo will do his first public autograph signing since his Boston Celtics won the NBA championship when Sure Shot Promotions brings the young point guard to the Mall of New Hampshire, in Manchester, N.H. The signing will be held Sept. 13 beginning at noon. Check www.sureshotoromotions.com.
KICKER SMITH SIGNS: John Smith, the New England place kicker best remembered for “The Snow Plow Game” in December 1982 in Foxboro, will be signing autographs from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sept. 14 at a “Great Pulls” collectors show at the Mitchell Memorial Club, in Middleboro, Mass. (29 Elm St.) “The Snow Plow Game” lives in Patriots history because a convict on work release at the stadium used a plow to remove snow to make Smith’s field-goal attempt easier. For updates, call (508) 977-2398.
TENNIS LEGENDS: Live and silent auctions of about 50 unique tennis items Friday at Cipriani 42nd Street, in New York, will benefit Newport’s International Tennis Hall of Fame. The auctions will be featured at the Legends Ball event. Among featured items will be hit sessions with tennis legends such as Andre Agassi, Monica Seles and Jim Courier. According to Doug Drotman, the event will also feature racquets signed by Pete Sampras, Maria Sharapova and 2008 Hall indictee Michael Chang. Other Hall of Famers expected to be on hand are Billie Jean King (who is being honored at the ball), Pam Shriver, Stan Smith, Tony Trabert, Mats Wilander and Vic Seixas Jr. For details, call (212) 843-1740 or email legendsball@hgnyc.com.
THURSDAY SHOW: Paul and Alex Mancini’s first-Thursday-of-the-month collector shows continue Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Kelley-Gazzerro VFW Post in Cranston (1418 Plainfield St.). The facility features a new flat-screen TV so collectors can watch Thursday-night football while they buy, trade or sell cards.
PHELPS CARDS: The 2005 Upper Deck card picturing Michael Phelps with the Olympic champion’s autograph highlighted last week eventually sold for $4,050 to the highest of 40 bids on eBay’s online marketplace. A 2004 Leaf Fans of the Game Phelps card offered by the same Santa Monica, Calif., seller went for $550 after 20 bids.
