Arnold Bailey: Collectors’ Corner: Ruth autograph headlines auction
01:00 AM EDT on Sunday, June 29, 2008
About 90 years after Babe Ruth was banished from Boston, his legend soon will return in a variety of forms at an auction of sports collectibles.
It was after the 1919 season that the Red Sox sold Ruth to the Yankees, an accursed deal that brought unmatched success to the New York team and 86 seasons of frustrating failure for their Boston opponents.
Now, Hall’s Nostalgia has put together several Ruth artifacts — including two of his popular and high-end autographs — for the firm’s 300th public auction of sports cards and memorabilia. So, when auctioneer Denis Briand opens the bidding at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 11, many collectors in the audience at the Knights of Columbus hall in Arlington, Mass., and others with phone, fax and mail bids will be focused on adding a half dozen Ruth items to their collections.
The biggest prize is likely to be a 1930s Montgomery Ward brand baseball that has a bright and bold Ruth signature on its sweet spot. The autograph is graded at about 8 or 9 on a scale of 10, and the ball is described as in excellent condition. The original cardboard box in which the baseball was packaged is included in the sale.
Also of special interest will be a framed Ruth autograph display measuring 17-by-22 that contains a cut signature, written in black with a steel-tip fountain pen, on a piece of paper about the size of a business card plus a sepia-tone 11-by-14 photo of Babe holding three bats on his shoulder.
Other Ruth items include a 50-page magazine-style book — titled Babe Ruth As I Knew Him –– published in 1948 by Dell and written by former teammate Waite Hoyt; a 1920s strip card picturing The Babe; a 9-inch cast-iron door stop that portrays the great slugger, and a wristwatch, of fairly recent production, that pictures Ruth (with a similar watch picturing another great Yankee, Mickey Mantle, in the same lot).
The full auction features about 390 lots, most of them sports cards and memorabilia but with a few nonsport items included.
Among other highlights are items signed by stars such as Ted Williams (including a signed image of the Williams statue by R.I. artist Armand LaMontagne), Bobby Orr, Roger Bannister and Red Auerbach, and illustrator Norman Rockwell; 15 Auravision baseball star records; complete-year runs of 1960s Sport magazines; lithos created from Celtics drawings by Tom Heinsohn, and a 1959-60 Brown University desk mat with sports schedules and local ads.
Check www.hallsnostalgia.com for the complete list or call Walter, David or Joel Hall (1-800-367-4255 or 781-595-7757, if calling from inside Massachusetts) for details including absentee bidding rules.
WISHING & BIDDING: Warwick-based A Wish Come True’s annual charity auction is open online with about 100 items up for bid including signed memorabilia (such as artifacts autographed by legends such as Ted Williams, Bob Cousy and Jake LaMotta), souvenir remnants of Fenway Park, travel and ticket packages including the 2008 Summer Olympics in China and the Baseball All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium; and entertainment collectibles like an Elvis Presley autograph and a sword (signed by David Carradine) from the Kill Bill movie.
Proceeds benefit the organization that, since 1982, has been granting wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses.
For details, check the www.awish.org Web site and search the special events option or contact John Rooke (781-9199). Bidding continues through July 13.
MALZONE SIGNING: Frank Malzone, who starred at third base for Boston’s Red Sox for a decade (1955 to 1965) will sign autographs on Friday during Douglas Keating’s annual Fourth of July sports collectors show at the Mansfield, Mass., Holiday Inn. He was the first third baseman in history to lead the league in games, putouts, assists, double plays and fielding percentage in the same season.
An eight-time all-star, Malzone won three straight Gold Gloves (the last to win that honor prior to Brooks Robinson’s 16-year reign). Malzone, 78, will sign from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. during the 8:45 to 2:45 event. Check www.cardboardpromotions.com for details.
FIRST THURSDAY: The tradition of first-Thursday-of-the-month sports collector shows in Cranston continues this week as Paul and Alex Mancini welcome dealers and collectors to the Kelly Gazzerro VFW post (1418 Plainfield Pike). The show runs from 6 to 9 p.m. and includes drawings and other surprises.
