RIC’s softball team almost topples No. 1 team in NCAA tourney

SALEM, Va. — The eighth-seeded Rhode Island College softball team (36-8) nearly pulled off a huge upset yesterday afternoon but the Anchorwomen fell to top-ranked Louisiana College (43-5), 1-0, in the first round of the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
McCaslin Carson hit a solo home run in the third inning for the game’s only run. She pitched a one-hitter, allowing a Kayla Jandreau single in the sixth inning. RIC starter Melanie Neece went the distance, allowing one run on five hits while striking out four.
RIC faces elimination today as the Anchorwomen play Wisconsin-Whitewater at 11 a.m.
