FOXBORO (AP) - Khano Smith scored on a penalty kick in the eighth minute of second half stoppage time and the New England Revolution beat Pachuca F.C. 1-0 Wednesday in a second round SuperLiga match.
New England is now 2-0 in its two SuperLiga matches at home, while defending SuperLiga champion Pachuca is 1-1.
Referee Walter Quesada awarded New England the penalty kick after a Pachuca handball violation in the penalty box on a short-side right shot by the Revolution's Kheli Dube.
After a scoreless first half, both teams had good scoring chances in the second.
In the 48th minute, Dube had a glancing shot off a Pachuca defensive miscue veer wide right of the goal. His drive off the right wing was knocked away in the 82nd minute.
In the 69th minute, Pachuca forward Damian Alvarez uncorked a blistering 25-yard drive which forced a diving hand save by New England goalie Matt Reis, who sent the ball bouncing off the right goal post.
The Revolution travel to Chivas USA for a third-round SuperLiga match Sunday.
