Pitch, Hit & Run contest set for today at town field
01:00 AM EDT on Friday, May 9, 2008
WEST WARWICK — The local qualifying competition for the statewide Aquafina Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run contest, for youngsters ages 7 to 14, will be held this afternoon at McCarthy Field in Riverside Park.
The baseball skills competition consists of three events: Pitching at a “strike zone” target, hitting a ball from a stationary tee, and sprinting from second base to home plate.
The top scorer in each contest as well as the overall winner will advance to the state contest at McCoy Stadium, in Pawtucket. The next level is a regional tourney at Fenway Park next month. And the finals will be played during the Major League’s All-Star Game, at Yankee Stadium.
Eligible to compete are youngsters 7 through 14 as of this July 17, the date of the All-Star Game.
Today’s local competition event is free, but registration forms require a parent or guardian’s signature and verification of age for the participant. Signup will be at 3:30 p.m. and the competitions will begin at 4.
In case of a rainout, the competition will be held tomorrow morning, with signup at 8:30.
