Edgewood Eagles win Pop Warner title, after altercation
02:57 PM EST on Saturday, December 13, 2008
The Edgewood Eagles captured the national Pop Warner Division II Midget Super Bowl in Florida yesterday despite an altercation Thursday involving the team. The Eagles defeated the Goulds Rams of Miami, 30-8, yesterday for the title.
The championship game followed a ruling from a disciplinary review board hearing Thursday night, said Pop Warner spokesman Jason Howarth.
The Edgewood team was involved in an altercation Thursday where members of the Dorchester (Mass.) Eagles Midget team assaulted members and adults affiliated with the Edgewood team, according to Howarth.
Both teams were evicted from their hotel in Florida, where the national competition is under way.
The teams consist of players ages 11 to 15.
Once something such as the hotel eviction happens, Howarth said, Pop Warner teams involved are considered in violation of the Pop Warner Code of Conduct — a policy that coaches must sign. The code violation generally triggers a disciplinary review board, made up of three neutral regional Pop Warner officials, that can call for a hearing within 24 hours.
Howarth said that Pop Warner asked if both parties wanted to hold a hearing Thursday night. The Rhode Island team did so, but the Dorchester team failed to respond, he said.
There have been “multiple behavior issues” involving the Dorchester team this week, he said, and due to those and security concerns, the team’s sports complex credentials were revoked. The review panel, at Thursday night’s hearing, granted the Edgewood team a one-day waiver of the requirement that teams must be on the competition grounds, which was not the case once the teams were evicted from the hotel in Lake Buena Vista, near Orlando where the competition is being held.
The review board also determined that the Edgewood Eagles could receive sanctions as league officials investigate the incident.
