Katzberg, King and Brandow at URI social-justice seminar
SOUTH KINGSTOWN — Local folksinger and activist Joyce Katzberg and the folksinging duo of Charlie King and Karen Brandow will speak and perform tonight at the University of Rhode Island as part of its Honors Colloquium. This fall’s semester-long Honors Colloquium is titled “Songs of Social Justice: The Rhetoric of Music.” It explores music as a mean of expression, persuasion and mobilization.

NARRAGANSETT — An 18-year-old man found bleeding near his family’s home Thursday night died of a gunshot wound to the head, according to the state medical examiner’s office.

Democrats win 4 seats on council
SOUTH KINGSTOWN –—The Democratic wave that hit the state yesterday swept South Kingstown as well, with Democrats filling seven of eight open seats on the Town Council and School Committee. Voters returned Democratic incumbents President Mary S. “Polly” Eddy and Vice President Kathleen A. Fogarty to the Town Council, where they will be joined by former School Committee Chairwoman Ella M. Whaley and retired South Kingstown Police Capt. William J. Flatley, both Democrats, according to results from the state Board of Elections.

Financial Town Meeting will become a piece of history
SOUTH KINGSTOWN — Voters yesterday approved changes to the Town Charter that eliminate the Financial Town Meeting and overhaul the budget approval process. They also gave the nod to $5.9 million in borrowing for open space, roadwork, renovations to the Neighborhood Guild and to build a community gym, based on unofficial results from the state Board of Elections.
