IRVING – Allen defensive lineman Tyler Hufstetler described his transfer from Garland Christian this season as a “change of pace.”
He wasn’t kidding.
The senior forced two fumbles, including a momentum-changing one early in the fourth quarter, that was the difference in Allen’s 21-7 victory against Cedar Hill in a Class 5A, Division II bi-district playoff at Texas Stadium. Allen (9-2) plays the winner of Saturday’s Southlake Carroll/Irving MacArthur contest in the area round.
Hufstetler attended Garland Christian for seven years before transferring to Allen this season. Garland Christian was 1-9 in 2004.
Both fumbles led to touchdowns, including one that linebacker Jeremy Griggs returned for a 70-yard score that gave Allen a 14-7 lead with 8:05 remaining in the second quarter. But, the biggest fumble came early in the fourth when Cedar Hill appeared to be headed for a game-tying touchdown.
Hufstetler jarred the ball loose from Jerell Norton on a quarterback draw inside Allen’s 5-yard line early in the fourth quarter. Hufstetler had an open shot at Norton when the lineman who was supposed to block him went to a blitzing linebacker instead.

“We’ve really grown as a defense,” Hufstetler said. “Everyday in practice, we’re flying to the football.”
Allen’s defense, which forced four turnovers, picked up for an offense that didn’t have its leading rusher Charles Opeseyitan. Allen coach Tom Westerberg said Opeseyitan has been suffering from a “nagging” injury the last few weeks and hopes he can play next week.
Cedar Hill outgained Allen in yardage, 387-242. But, Cedar Hill’s turnovers were costly.
“The important thing was to get to the next round,” Westerberg said. “We didn’t care how we did it.”
Allen’s offense got a boost when quarterback Nathan Dick entered on Allen’s third series. Dick, Allen’s starter at the beginning of the season, hadn’t suited up since injuring his leg five games ago against Plano. Allen had sputtered on its first two drives, going three and out each time. Although Allen didn’t score on Dick’s first drive, it was clear the offense had taken a new life.
Westerberg said he planned on playing Dick on the third series all along. He liked how he performed and kept him in there for most of the remainder of the game. Dick finished with a crisp 12-of-16 passing for 193 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.
Dick hit Dan Buckner on a 15-yard slant with 10:51 remaining in the second quarter to tie the game, 7-7. The score was set up by a 53-yard kick return by Matt Morrison.
Allen certainly had playoff experience on its side. Cedar Hill (7-4) was seeking its first ever playoff victory in eight tries. It was making its first playoff appearance as a Class 5A school. Allen qualified for the playoffs for the seventh straight time.
