Maj. Gen. Edward W. Tonini is spending the week in Iraq visiting with Kentucky National Guard troops.
Tonini, Kentucky's adjutant general, said in a telephone interview Wednesday that he has "an all new appreciation for the tremendously difficult job" the military is doing in Iraq. More than 300 Kentucky guardsmen are currently stationed there.
Tonini said conditions have improved "as far as the level of hostility." But he said the "unbelievable heat" remains an enemy for the troops.
