Walk your dog in the SPCA’s Halloween parade

01:00 AM EDT on Sunday, October 21, 2007

Want to dress up the dog? The Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is going to give you that chance next Sunday with its fifth annual Howling Hounds Dog Walk at Goddard State Park, a beautiful stretch of green on the water in East Greenwich. Participants are invited to dress up their four-legged best pals in their finest costumes to support and raise funds to “Speak for those who cannot speak for themselves” — which is essentially the motto of the organization, whose purpose is to protect animal life.

The event kicks off with registration from 10 to 10:55 a.m. At 10:30, the Rhode Island Sheriff’s Department K-9 Unit will be on hand to greet and meet, and at 11 a.m. the walk begins. At noon, the dogs will be glad to know, lunch will take place. The top fundraiser prizes will be awarded at 12:15 followed by a costume contest and best dog/owner look-alike contest.

The $20 registration fee includes a T-shirt, coffee, doughnuts, lunch and a raffle ticket. There will be vendors’ tables, a kids’ craft area and a dog agility play area.

Dogs must stay on a leash the entire event and have a current rabies tag or certificate available. Rain date: Nov. 11. Call (401) 438-8150 or visit www.rispcadogwalk.com.
