WOONSOCKET — A teenage boy was ordered held at the Training School yesterday after an incident in which he shot a 12-year-old boy in the neck with a BB gun, the police said.

The 16-year-old shooter, who has not been identified because he is a minor, was charged with felony assault and weapons possession after the arresting officer found a 3½-inch knife in his pocket.

At the teenager’s arraignment yesterday in Family Court, his probation officer told the court that the boy has a prior record and requested that he be held at the Training School until Dec. 1, when he will return to court for a probable-cause hearing. The police refused to comment on the boy’s past record because he is a juvenile.

The police say the 16-year-old and a 14-year-old friend shot the younger boy with a BB gun while he was walking down the street past them in a housing development on Rockridge Drive Sunday around 4 p.m.

The victim suffered minor injuries to the back of his neck, according to Woonsocket Police Lt. Timothy S. Paul. He was transported to Landmark Medical Center, where he was treated and released.

The boy identified his attackers and told the police he knew the older boys from previous run-ins in the neighborhood.

Paul said it was unclear what provoked the attack.

When the police arrested the pair, they found the BB gun in the 14-year-old boy’s pocket. He was arrested on charges of possessing a firearm as a minor and conspiracy. His arraignment information was not available yesterday.

This is at least the fifth time Woonsocket teenagers have been charged with possession of a BB gun. In what is perhaps the most bizarre incident, an 18-year-old man was caught firing at several young children from the passenger seat of a minivan in a drive-by shooting in May. None of the children was hurt. The man was charged with four counts of felony assault.
