Woman served alcohol to teen before fatal crash, police say

01:00 AM EDT on Thursday, May 15, 2008

WEST WARWICK — A local woman has been charged with serving alcohol to a 17-year-old youth on the night his car struck and killed another motorist on Route 2 in Warwick last March.

The police said Denise Daudelin, 57, of 42 Spencer St., played host the evening of March 20 for a party in her home at which nearly 11 minors were drinking alcohol.

Later that night, the 17-year-old and a friend left the party. After stopping to eat at a Wendy’s, the police said, they headed south on Route 2 and the teen’s Volkswagen Jetta struck a Toyota Camry driven by Luisa Avila, 46, of West Warwick.

Avila, a mother of two who was heading home from a work shift at Amtrol, was killed instantly, according to the police.

Daudelin, charged with violating the social-host law, a misdemeanor, appeared yesterday in Superior Court, Warwick, where she was released in $1,000 personal recognizance.

In the course of their investigation, the West Warwick police also filed alcohol possession charges against three 16-year-olds and a 17-year-old.
