W. Warwick forced to delay tree ritual
01:00 AM EST on Saturday, November 25, 2006
WEST WARWICK — Heavy rains on Thanksgiving Day forced the annual town tree lighting in Phenix Square to be rescheduled for tomorrow.
“We showed up, but no one else did,” said council member David Gosselin Jr., who is coordinating the event.
They’ll try again tomorrow at 6 p.m., when Santa Claus will arrive at the square on a fire truck and hand out candy canes. Phenix Square is on Main Street at Fairview Avenue.
The event is sponsored by a group of Phenix-area businesses who maintain the park and provide the refreshments, Gosselin said.
“It’s a great way for children and the people of West Warwick to bring in the holidays,” Gosselin said.
