8 arrested in early-July drug busts

01:00 AM EDT on Friday, July 18, 2008

WESTERLY — An eight-week police sweep that ended on the Fourth of July gave eight suspects a long Independence Day weekend behind bars on felony drug charges.

Westerly police detectives targeting local drug dealers made the first arrest in late June when they arrested Derek Slater, 22, of 62 Watch Hill Rd., on two counts of delivery of cocaine and one count of possession with intent to deliver. He was held without bail as a violator of probation in a 2006 felony.

Four people were arrested July 3, all charged with felonies except Michael Wylie, 20, of 2 Tower St. He pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor shoplifting and was released on his own recognizance, only to be arrested the next day on felony drug charges — one count each of delivery of cocaine, delivery of marijuana and possession of cocaine. He was unable to post surety bail set July 8.

Those arrested on felony charges July 3:

Christopher Wilk, 26, of 150 Main St., arrested on three counts of delivery of marijuana, was held without bail. Court documents show the three counts as delivery of cocaine.

Cuong Nguyen turned 19 on Wednesday facing two counts of delivery of marijuana and one count of possession with intent to deliver marijuana.

John Richards, 19, of 4 Gavitt Ave., was held without bail on a single count of delivery of marijuana.

On July 4, four people were arrested, Wylie for the second time in two days.

The other three are:

Frank Giorno, 45, of 57 Pierce St., on three counts of cocaine delivery and one count of possession with intent to deliver cocaine. He was held without bail.

Michelle Hall, 29, of 63 Pierce St., on one count of delivery of a controlled substance (Vicodin pills).

Justine Pierce, 19, 2 Tower St., on one count of possession of cocaine. She posted bail on July 7.

Westerly Police Chief Edward A. Mello said the charges resulted from selling drugs to undercover agents. More than $10,000 in cash and drugs was seized, Mello said, along with two vehicles.
